Realizing the need for an inpatient hospice facility in the Baton Rouge area that could provide those with symptoms not well managed at home an option for care, St. Joseph Hospice opened the doors of The Carpenter House in December of 2008.
Once opened, The Carpenter House became the first freestanding inpatient hospice facility in Baton Rouge. Offering a warm, home-like atmosphere, The Carpenter House offers 16 private rooms for patients who require 24-hour nursing care. Each room has a flat-screen television and a chair that converts into a bed for the comfort of a family member, friend or caregiver who wishes to spend the night with the patient.
Other amenities include:
- Family Dining Room with Full Size Dining Table
- Family Room with Flat-Screen Television
- Furnished Library with Computer Access
- Meditation Chapel
- Welcoming Atrium with Waterfall
- Children’s Playroom with Toys and Games
- Restrooms for Family Members and Guests Complete with Shower Facilities
- Snack Bar with Full Size Refrigerator, Microwave and Freshly Brewed Coffee

The Carpenter House allows patients to transition directly from the hospital into a home-like atmosphere and helps patients and family members in need of intense symptom management as they plan for long-term arrangements at their residence. During their stay, they have a chance to meet and get to know the hospice staff that will provide care for them at home.
For St. Joseph Hospice patients, The Carpenter House can provide options to emergency room care should symptoms worsen or in times of patient and/or caregiver crisis.
Named in honor of the profession of St. Joseph, who is the patron saint of a peaceful death, The Carpenter House serves as a place of peace for terminally ill patients with symptoms not well managed at home.
